The White House was finished in November 1800 to make John Adams the first president ever to reside in it. The construction of the White House was overseen by President George Washington, and he labeled it the "People's Home". John Adams prayed after his first night in the White House that "only wise and virtuous persons occupy this house".
The White House is used for many purposes such as the President and family Residence, State receptions, strategic sessions, and grand balls. The White House got its soul during the Civil War, and ever since it has been at the center of the collective American psyche. In the early 20th century a West and East Wing were added to the Primary White House
residence. These wings include the Oval Office, the president's office, and the offices of other staff members. The White House just celebrated its 200th birthday in the presence of President Clinton and several former Presidents. The White House to this day serves as the House of Democracy.
