George Washington fought as a colonial officer under the British in the French and Indian War (1754-1763), between the French and British over control of the St. Lawrence and Ohio rivers. He later commanded the Continental Army, against the British he had formerly fought for, in the American Revolution. His leadership proved crucial to the achievement of independence from England. In 1787, he presided over the second Federal Constitutional Convention, and in 1789, took office as the first president of the United States. He reached popularity at the time of the end of the French and Indian Conflict.
